Provigil Addiction Treatment & Recovery Centers

There are many different types of medication that keep people awake. Provigil is one of those medications. Those who take it can become addicted to it, even if it is used to treat a legitimate medical disorder.

What is Provigil?

Provigil or Modafinil is a type of medication that works on promoting wakefulness. It alters the brain’s neurotransmitters. Many doctors have prescribed this medication to treat severe sleepiness that is caused by shift work sleep disorder, obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, or sleep apnea. Provigil can help with some of the sleepiness that is associated with these disorders, however, it will not get rid of all the sleepiness a person may have.

There are Provigil side effects long term that should be discussed, as well. These include headaches, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, nervousness, anxiety, agitation, dry mouth, and insomnia.

How is Provigil Used?

Provigil should be taken exactly as the doctor prescribes it. The prescribing doctor will decide on the appropriate dosage and timing of the dose, as well. The dose should never be altered without the doctor’s permission. Generally, people who have narcolepsy or obstructive sleep apnea will be prescribed this medication once every morning. Those with shift work sleep disorder will generally be prescribed this medication about an hour before their work shift begins. Provigil can be taken with or without food. It should not be overused or abused in any way.

Many people want to know how long does Provigil last? The half-life after many doses is around 15 hours.

Provigil Addiction

According to the US National Library of Medicine, there is a very low liability for abuse and dependence with Provigil. However, this doesn’t mean that someone can’t develop an addiction to it. An addiction can be developed to anything that a person can become dependent upon. Many people will use modafinil and alcohol together, further creating negative side effects. If someone is pregnant and using modafinil, due to the lack of studies knowing whether or not it is dangerous to the fetus, they should discontinue its use.

Signs and Symptoms of Provigil Abuse

Unfortunately, there are some people who abuse Provigil. They may use Provigil and alcohol. They may even mix the two and make Provigil alcohol. Some people will even fail a Provigil drug test because they can’t stop using the drug on their own. It is important to be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of Provigil abuse which are:

  • Using more of the medication than prescribed
  • Buying the drug from someplace other than the pharmacy
  • Feeling very jittery
  • Awake for days on end

If you notice these Provigil side effects, someone might be abusing the drug. It is important that this person goes through modafinil withdrawal or Provigil withdrawal to get off the medication.
