Monarch Shores

My Experience

“I had 14 years of sobriety at one point and relapsed. Going back out and going down that rabbit hole is not an option. I am grateful to say I have now been sober since August 1st, 2023 and I utilize every single coping mechanisms that I learned while at Monarch. I’d like to get back to California at some point and work in this field – that is where my heart is at right now. Keeping hope alive, because hope is everything.”

Alan was interviewed about his recovery journey and experience at Monarch Shores, and here is what he had to say:

When did you attend Monarch Shores?

I attended Monarch Shores from July 31st, 2023 to January 2nd, 2024.

What is your sobriety date?

My sobriety date is August 1st, 2023.

Why did you choose Monarch Shores?

There were a number of reasons, including location, atmosphere, and the environment that looked inviting. Another key reason was the fact that I could use my electronic devices. I know of other programs that preach that having your electronics is a big distraction, I would totally disagree. I believe being totally cut off from your loved ones and certain responsibilities is a much larger distraction, it’s a huge stressor.

What part of treatment was the most helpful?

For me, the visits with my therapist were beyond valuable. Sitting down in a safe environment and being able to share my story (play the tape) was priceless. I was able to be vulnerable, open and honest, along with a few tears. There are coping mechanisms and strategies that I’ve learned, these tools are saving my life. I’m learning to be kind to myself, patient, and grateful. Moving down the road, there are certain qualities that I truly want to possess that I’m working on each and every day. Some of the things that are important to me are gratitude, empathy, compassion, sincerity, understanding, and kindness.

Who made the biggest impact on your journey to recovery?

Melissa helped me out immensely. Another individual that I met a short time later, was Stephanie. She went on to become my therapist, and I cannot say enough in regards to how she helped me. Shanice was a key member in my healing. She was so kind, sincere and empathetic. Another individual who helped me along and with many great discussions was Derrick. We had many long discussions about life, God, and our higher powers. All these individuals played a huge part in my early recovery and helped change my life.

How has your life changed since attending Monarch Shores?

My life has changed in many ways, including my attitude. I have to be careful in the way I perceive things. You also can’t always believe what you think. It’s important to remain positive and hopeful, even in some of the most difficult and trying times. Monarch has provided me with the necessary tools, in order to fight that good fight every single day.

What advice do you have for someone considering treatment?

If you’re considering treatment to mend your soul and body, to get on the right track and start living your life, the place and program you choose is incredibly vital. Just remember Monarch Shores gives you the necessary room to grow.
