First Choice Health Network & Rehab Coverage

First Choice Health is a preferred provider organization (PPO) that offers behavioral health options that can treat mental health, abuse and addictions to drugs and alcohol, and other conditions for members in the northwestern United States.

Since 1985, First Choice Health’s preferred provider organization (PPO) network has provided health care services and insurance coverage. With headquarters in Seattle, Washington, it serves about a million people in the northwestern United States.

Does First Choice Health Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

About 14.5 million U.S. residents had an alcohol use disorder in 2019, reported the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). Meanwhile, drug overdoses killed more than 93,000 U.S. residents in 2020, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Such statistics indicate that many people need drug and alcohol rehab. First Choice Health helps its members find such vital assistance.

Length of Addiction Treatment First Choice Health Covers

The length of an addiction treatment program can depend on a number of factors:

  • Types of substances being abused.
  • The severity of substance use disorder or addiction.
  • Co-existing mental or physical health problems.
  • Needed or preferred treatment options.
  • Coverage allowances from insurance providers.

Members of First Choice Health should research their plans and contact their preferred treatment providers to determine the length of treatment programs.

Does First Choice Health Also Cover Mental Health?

Substance use disorder, addiction, and mental health are often related. People with mental health conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, or anxiety might use alcohol or drugs as coping mechanisms. But they can easily become dependent on these substances, abuse them, and become addicted to them.

To treat mental health, First Choice Health offers employee assistance programs (EAPs). For employees of certain organizations, EAPs provide referral services, support for crisis situations, and counseling.

First Choice Health Behavioral Health Insurance

Misusing drugs and alcohol can affect mental and physical health in various ways. Behavioral health assistance addresses such behaviors, and First Choice Health offers such help.

It provides behavioral health care managers and nurses. After talking with these health care professionals, First Choice Health members might then talk with psychiatric nurse practitioners, licensed counselors or therapists, psychologists, or psychiatrists.

To find treatment providers, First Choice Health members can visit its Behavioral Health Directory or contact a behavioral health case manager by completing an online form or calling (800) 808a0450.

First Choice Health Inpatient Rehab

By consulting with a First Choice Health behavioral health case manager, people can learn about their inpatient rehab options. During inpatient rehab, people live and receive treatment at the same facilities.

Inpatient options could include care at a hospital, a residential addiction treatment center, or a mental health treatment facility. Consulting First Choice Health’s Behavioral Health Directory can be an excellent way to find inpatient treatment facilities.

First Choice Health Outpatient Services

If they’re struggling with drugs or alcohol, First Choice Health members can also receive outpatient assistance that allows them to live at home while they’re receiving treatment.

Outpatient assistance comes in many forms. It can include group or individual therapy. Outpatient approaches also include partial hospitalization programs and intensive outpatient programs (PHPs and IOPs). These programs incorporate intensive treatment but don’t require participants to live full-time at treatment facilities like residential and inpatient programs.

Does First Choice Health Cover Suboxone? Does First Choice Health Cover Methadone Treatment?

Depending on a client’s condition, addiction care could include detox (detoxification from alcohol or drugs) and/or medication assisted-treatment (also known as medically assisted treatment or MAT).

During MAT, doctors prescribe medications to ease withdrawal pains and cravings. People might want to check to determine if their rehab providers will prescribe drugs such as Suboxone (buprenorphine and naloxone), methadone, Vivitrol (naltrexone), or Antabuse (disulfiram) and if First Choice Health will cover their cost.

What You Can Expect from First Choice Health In Rehab

Addictions are different, and so are people. While their substance use disorder and addiction assistance plans are also different, they sometimes share a few similarities. They can include:

Intake processes determine the severity of a person’s substance use disorder or addiction, help clients complete paperwork, and teach them about their treatment centers or programs.

Detox (detoxification) removes drugs and alcohol from the body and sometimes uses medications to ease the process.

Treatment differs according to the person but often consists of some sort of therapy (group, individual, or family), sobriety support groups, and education.

Sobriety support groups give people the opportunity to meet with others who have had problems with drugs or alcohol. Groups could incorporate spirituality and a series of steps or provide more secular, evidence-based support.

Aftercare procedures offer continued assistance after people end their addiction treatment centers programs or centers. The procedures can include support groups or therapists near the people’s homes.

Affordable Care Act

Legislation known as the Affordable Care Act has changed the way insurers approach health care.

Also known by other names, including ACA and Obamacare, the Affordable Care Act urges health insurance providers to cover mental health and substance use disorders just as they cover services related to physical health. First Choice Health provides several health care options.

Paying for Services That Are Not Covered by First Choice Health Insurance Policy

By visiting the organization’s website, First Choice Health PPO members can file claims and find other forms and information to help them pay for treatment that addresses addiction and other mental and physical conditions.

If the PPO doesn’t cover their expenses, First Choice Health can ask their rehab providers if they’ll charge on sliding scales or ask for discounts.

Speaking of asking, people can also ask loved ones for loans or gifts, or talk to banks about loans, or apply for grants and scholarships from private organizations.

While addiction treatment can be expensive, the cost shouldn’t deter people from seeking it.
