Willow Springs Recovery
My Experience
“I was very high functioning and able to hide my drinking. Life without alcohol seemed impossible, because it was the only thing that made the noise in my head quiet and eased my anxiety. Choosing to go to Willow Springs was the best decision for me, because they offer the option for non-12 step programs. Drinking alcohol now just seems like the worst idea possible. I now have over 2 years sober and I can genuinely credit that to my time at Willow Springs.”
Samantha was interviewed about her recovery journey and experience at Willow Springs Recovery, and here is what she had to say:
When did you attend Willow Springs Recovery?
October 28th, 2021 – November 27th, 2021
What is your sobriety date?
10/28/2021
Why did you choose our program?
I chose Willow Springs because I was looking for a program that offered something science-based versus something like AA.
What part of treatment was the most helpful?
Hands down, it was the groups, where we worked on relapse prevention, and learned the science behind how the brain becomes wired for addiction to begin with. I practice CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), “thought-stopping” so often it’s become 2nd nature to how I process my thoughts and emotions. After being sober almost 2 and a half years, I credit my sobriety today to that tool.
Who at our program made the biggest impact in your recovery journey?
My counselor, Anita. I would dread it when I was scheduled to see her because I couldn’t stand to face my emotions after years of avoiding them with alcohol. She was the perfect kind of “tough” push I needed at that time. By the time I left, I was wanting to take her with me.
How has your life changed since attending Willow Springs Recovery?
People say “life is so much better” in sobriety. But, really, life is still just life. Sometimes life is awesome and sometimes things fall apart. The difference now is that I’m going through the ups and downs of life with a clear mind. So, “life is better” because I’m not adding booze to the equation to make it WORSE.
What advice do you have for someone considering treatment?
Sobriety is rarely a linear path. Most of us will have starts and stops, ups and downs, skinned knees and bruised egos. And that’s ok. Every day you have sober is a win and no one can take that win away from you. Give yourself grace and ask for help when you are ready to accept it. You’ll quit exactly when you are done.
