The United States is in a substance use disorder crisis, not just a drug or an opioid crisis. Stimulant abuse—cocaine, methamphetamine—is also on the rise. Substances not commonly thought of as drugs—alcohol, tobacco/nicotine—are more abused than fentanyl, heroin, and prescription opioids. Benzodiazepines, such as alprazolam (Xanax), cause one in 10 overdose deaths. Marijuana—the most used illicit substance, and third overall.
