Shelly’s Story

My experience with Keystone Retreat Behavioral Health was genuinely positive. The team truly cares about the people they serve, and throughout my time there I felt like a priority—not just another name on a chart. Whenever I shared a need or concern, it was addressed quickly and respectfully, without hesitation. The staff showed real empathy and made me feel welcome from the moment I arrived. They went above and beyond to make sure my time there was both supportive and effective, and I’m grateful for the care I received.

Center Information

About the Facility

Keystone Retreat Behavioral Health is an addiction treatment facility in rural Pennsylvania. We offer a wide range of substance and alcohol use disorder treatment options including Detox and Residential.

We believe that each person that walks through our doors for treatment is an individual, and as such, we believe in treating each individual according to their needs.
We offer a full range of treatment activities including group therapies, individual sessions, nutritious chef-prepared meals, and recreational activities for all clients.

About the Staff

Keystone Retreat Behavioral Health has medical professionals on-site who see clients on a one-on-one basis. This is especially important during the detox phase of recovery, as each client needs to be monitored to ensure they are as comfortable as possible.

Group facilitators oversee group therapy sessions, and Therapists offer individual therapy sessions to clients. Each patient is also assigned a case manager, who will work with them to to create their individualized treatment plan, during their stay at Keystone Retreat Behavioral Health, as well as help build aftercare programs that will offer the best opportunity for long-term recovery success.

A recovery advocate also works to bridge the gap between clients and staff, to facilitate communication and ensure clients’ needs and concerns are addressed.

All staffers receive continuing education from Relias on a monthly and annual basis to better help clients recover from substance use disorder.

Amenities and Activities

Besides group and one-on-one therapies, clients will have plenty of options to recover and refresh. In addition to three nutritious and delicious meals per day, we also offer a variety of snacks for our clients to grab any time.

When a client needs quiet time they can settle in by the large stone fireplace or retreat to the meditation room. Since Keystone Retreat Behavioral Health is an electronic friendly facility, we encourage our clients to communicate with loved ones as a leisure activity.

Clients may gather in lounging areas or by the indoor pool to socialize or to swim. The gaming area offers the opportunity to relax with others to play a game of foosball or ping-pong. Group activities include Sunday hikes, bowling, movies, kickball, volleyball, and more.

Intake and Detox

Intake coordinators explain what to expect in the days and weeks to come. When clients arrive, they receive an initial assessment. A nurse and a detox clinician perform medical and psychological evaluations. This helps compile a complete and up-to-date picture of the patient’s health information, which is used to shape an individualized treatment plan.

Detoxification is the first stage of recovery, where the client tapers off drugs or alcohol. Because it can be one of the most challenging chapters of a person’s rehabilitation, Keystone Retreat Behavioral Health has two four-bed rooms where clients can detox in comfort and safety. Specialists provide quick, personalized care throughout the process, minimizing the more uncomfortable stages of withdrawal.

Our Treatments

Keystone Retreat Behavioral Health develops a client’s treatment plan based on a treatment team structure with client involvement and perspective that allows the patient to act as an equal partner. Goals at all levels of treatment vary based on such factors as the treatment population, program comprehensiveness, and the program’s philosophy. The client-centered approach considers the client’s social, physical, culture, spiritual, environmental, medical and psychological needs.

Although programs differ, all programs attempt to address the following general goals:

  • To achieve abstinence from alcohol and drugs
  • To foster behavioral changes that support abstinence and a new lifestyle
  • To facilitate active participation in community-based support systems (e.g. 12-step support groups, SMART Recovery, and more)
  • To assist clients in identifying and addressing a wide range of psychosocial problems (e.g., housing, employment, adherence to probation requirements)
  • To assist clients in developing a positive support network
  • To improve clients’ problem-solving skills and coping strategies

Insurance will often cover the client’s ability to extend treatment. Typically, treatment varies between 30, 60, and 90 days. If insurance covers it and the client is willing, sometimes treatment can be extended for up to eight additional weeks.

Keystone Retreat Behavioral Health will provide support groups on-campus and clients may have to opportunity to participate in groups in the community.

Groups on-campus include, but not limited to Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Veterans, Celebrate Recovery, LGBTQ+, and Smart Recovery. These groups are typically for support and led by those in recovery.

Clients will be afforded the opportunity to participate in day trips in the local community and the surrounding St. Louis Metropolitan area during their stay.

What to Expect

Keystone Retreat Behavioral Health’s staffers will pick up clients from anywhere within a two-hour radius. Once clients arrive, they’ll be greeted by friendly faces, who will take a complete medical history and give a tour.

Clients receive thorough medical and mental health examinations, so a unique treatment plan can be prescribed for their needs. They may undergo detox, and once they’ve completed that phase, they’ll move into their room and begin a schedule that includes talk therapy and counseling designed to heal both the mind and the body.

Everyday Life at the Center

Even though Keystone Retreat Behavioral Health is a treatment facility, it also serves as a temporary home for clients. To further facilitate healing, the center feels more like a hotel, where clients can let go of day-to-day stresses and focus on recovery, take part in skill-building exercises, and dine on freshly prepared meals three times a day.

The pool is the perfect place to take a dip. We offer a gym with various workout equipment, so our clients can focus on their physical wellbeing in addition to their mental wellness. Guests are allowed (with permission) on Sundays, and group outings are regularly scheduled.

Food

Mealtimes are set. Breakfast is 7:30–8:30 am, lunch is noon–1:00 pm, and dinner is from 5:00–6:00 pm. The menu is typically prepared on a four-week basis. If the client has special needs or doesn’t like the meal for the day, other arrangements can be made.

What to Bring

Pennsylvania has four seasons—sometimes all four in the course of a day. Out-of-town visitors are advised to pack for anything, just in case. That means the potential for snow squalls in July but also July weather in January. Or vice-versa.

It’s a good idea to pack essentials, but Keystone Retreat Behavioral Health can provide travel-size toiletries like soaps, toothpaste, and deodorant, as needed. In the warmer seasons, bring a swimsuit for pool time.

There are shops nearby, too, for clients who have permission to leave after their therapies for the day. Clients may wish to bring their laptops or cell phones to keep in touch. Notebooks are a good idea, too, as they’re great for journaling, which can be a helpful component of therapy.
